Ealing In A Different Light

First Group Exhibition 1 February - 13 April 2007

A new photographic exhibition which aims to show the hidden faces of Ealing opens in Gunnersbury on February 1st.

Ealing: In a Different Light is the work of 13 members of a local photography group, founded in 2005. The exhibitors have tackled disparate subjects, from urban areas to woodlands.

Some have treated local landmarks in a unique way, whilst others have sought out lesser-known spots. Ealing residents are also featured in the exhibition - faces we see on the streets day-by-day, their lives illuminated by the camera.

The photographers are all members of London Independent Photography, a 300-strong collection of amateur and professional workers. The Ealing group is a satellite group of LIP, meeting regularly to share experience and inspiration. This is The Ealing Group's first exhibition and is showing in Gunnersbury Park Museum from 1st February until mid-April.

Group co-ordinator Julie Long said: "This is an alternative look at Ealing by some talented workers who have a real feel for the area. It's an impressive body of work - particularly because some of us only began serious photography within the past year."

Ealing: In a Different Light is open daily from Thursday 1st February 2007 to Friday 13th (not 12th) April 11.00am - 4.00pm, admission free. Gunnersbury Park Museum: Gunnersbury Park, Popes Lane, London, W3 8LQ. Inspiration behind the exhibition gives you an insight to the influences that spurred our exhibitors on to capture and show their images for the group's first exhibition.

This is a fascinating and lively exhibition including a wide variety of subjects and styles. The response to the launch was overwhelming. It brought a whole new audience into the museum and everyone, including the Mayor of Ealing, was very enthusiastic about the pictures. This is a very talented group who have managed to capture the diversity of the borough. Thank you so much for yesterday. You were all so organised. It went like clockwork and it was lovely to have a new and enthusiastic audience in the museum. ~ Vanda Foster, Deputy Curator, Gunnersbury Park Museum

A visual masterclass in photography. Delighted to see so many attending too. Excellent, stimulating and challenging. ~ John Todd, Cllr Hounslow

The Opening of the Exhibition could not have been more successful. At opening time the room filled up, and it stayed full until closing time, when we had to ask people to go home so that we could lock up. It was good to see so many photographers among the crowd - both LIP Members and Independent Photographers. The guest of honour was the Lady Mayor, who was charmed by the representations of her council's constituency, and complimentary in her speech. Every exhibitor praised the organisation and professional presentation of the work. I left the building feeling that my team had just won the F.A. Cup. ~ Tony Mayne

The opening/private view went beyond (so hoped for) expectations - the exhibition room was full with guests from start to finish. Visitors seemed to enjoy the variety which was on offer and being able to look at their borough in a different light indeed. Appraisal was positive throughout and everybody commented on the professional level of display. Two Hounslow councillors and the Mayoress of Ealing attended, who were all very pleased and impressed with what was on offer, not only because of the quality of the work but also finding things they had not known about at all before! The Mayor's address was very complimentary. I saw a lot of smiling faces and I think we can be proud of our individual and joint effort, especially since our group is barely out of its infancy. ~ Brigitte Flock

For me the preparation was one of the most harrowing experiences I have ever had to go through. Up until about 2 weeks before the hanging date I had fears that my work would never be good enough and that it would be better to save face and just pull out. Once all the images had been printed and framed I felt a little easier, that is until private viewing day. This day was a day that totally outstretched any ideas I had as to how a private viewing should be. To say that the day was busy from start to finish is an understatement and I (and I believe the rest of the group too) went away feeling mighty proud of what we had accomplished. I never thought I would ever say this but, I am very glad to have taken part in this experience and thank my colleagues massively for their support. When's the next one???? ~ Howard Murray
